Not surprisingly, Microsoft promises that Whistler will be the most stable and dependable Windows ever, designed to provide the best experience at home and in business. Starting next winter, the Whistler family of operating systems will slowly begin to replace all current Microsoft OSs, from the Windows 95/98 to future Windows 2000 upgrades. Whistler is Microsoft's plan for an uber-OS that marries NT stability with Millennium Edition's easy-to-use interface and home-computing capabilities. "Whistler," the code name for the next release of Windows 2000, is cirrently at beta 1 stage, and is expected to debut during the summer of 2001.
The two-stage release is designed to provide the earliest possible availability of major features. Microsoft executives have said Whistler will be the company's most important Windows release since the company delivered Windows 95 in August 1995.Microsoft sent the first beta release of Whistler to testers in October 2000.Special report Microsoft is working on two future releases of Windows 2000 that will maximize the integration of. But Microsoft is taking unusually high security precautions to make sure that testers, the press and the public don't get to see the interface changes before the product - the successor to Windows 2000 - goes to Beta 2, which is expected to occur the week of 12 February.The Personal, or consumer, and Professional, or business, desktop versions of Whistler are expected to ship before the end of 2001, with 32-bit and 64-bit server versions slated to follow several months later.
But testers aren't exactly sure yet what has changed.On Tuesday, Microsoft privately alerted Whistler testers that it is making substantial changes to the look and feel of the desktop versions of Whistler, according to tester reports. Something interesting happened to Whistler, Microsoft's next generation of the Windows operating system, on its way to its second beta release.
